So, I’m actually a speech and language pathologist by profession, and I came up here in… December I think it was… to help out at a nursing facility around here - a skilled nursing facility. And when I first came here, I just didn’t see what was here. I thought there was nothing here. And then, as time went on… I started to meet people. I started to talk to people in the community, and people started to tell me about the history in Norwich and Chenango County. And it just opened my eyes up to the place in a whole different way.

So the first person who actually told me anything about the history was Bear at Dickie’s, at Dickie’s Barbeque. I went there - I had gone there a couple of times - so one time I decided to just sit at the bar cause I was by myself and he was there - didn’t know he was the owner- and he started asking me what I do here. And I told him my view of the area and he started telling me about the history and that’s really what opened my eyes.

And then from there, I started… really looking and digging and then because I worked at the nursing home, I met some people who… you know, had obviously lived here many, many years, or who’s family I started to connect with and they started telling me other things. And then I started getting invited to events and you know I went to… the brewery for music events one night and met some people there. Then I went to Golden Artists; they had an opening of their gallery a few weeks ago, and I saw people that I saw at another event. And then last time, I went to the historical society and met Jessica. And that was the icing on the cake. She told me about this event; she told me about the event tomorrow with the Sherburne Inn; and I actually came up here to work this week specifically for these two events.

But I want to tell you about a project I’m working on. And this is actually how I got to Jessica and the historical society. It’s a film project and it’s a film that’s based on a novel and the person who wrote the novel lived up here when he wrote the book. So, it dawned on me one day that the landscape informed the setting. And then I started to even inquire more and thought about - well maybe we should film this film up here. Well, the film really is about - I say - appropriate for this event and is how I got here. It’s about how we should care for and value older people in a greater way. And that’s the takeaway from the book - their contribution to society. How they work across generations to solve some of the greatest problems of society.

So, in learning about the area, and thinking about the film project and the history of Norwich and this county, I spoke to the - I have a film producer from a production company who’s willing to make the film and I said, “let’s bring in that when we lose elders or devalue them and the wisdom - not only of their life’s journey - we also lose the wisdom and stories of areas where they lived. And let’s bring into it the history of areas and if we’re filming here, the history of Norwich.” So that’s my passion project. And that’s what really brought me here today.
