Social Distancing in the Conservatory Garden, April 2020

For the last few weeks I've been loving the way my East Harlem block has united in support of the health care workers and other essential frontline workers - postal carriers, grocery workers, deliver people, etc... I really look forward to hanging out my 7th story window and seeing my neighbors across the street - who I don't know - do the same, ringing bells, clapping, whooping it up. A really great side effect is the fondness I now feel for the people in the windows facing me, even if they're just far enough away that I likely wouldn't recognize them on the sidewalk below.

If we don't continue the tradition when the dust settles, I hope we'll have an annual street party to commemorate the neighborly impulse that arose from our shared participation.
