Hello. My name is Vidal Dominguez. I'm from Honduras. I came to the United States of America for the purpose of a better future. My first month was very difficult because I didn't speak English, I had difficulties understanding English. I had difficulties understanding people at work, questions on the street, on the bus, and on the train. I remember it as if it were yesterday. Now that I live in New York City, I need to learn English. That is why I enjoyed enrolling in an adult education program.

2. What has changed in your life since you started your adult education class? How has adult education helped to support your goals and plans for the future?00:00Since I started my adult education classes I feel much more confident because I can communicate effectively with people in English. I can travel freely because I can communicate effectively, ask questions and understand their answers. Adult education has changed my life in a positive way. I started English class at Kingsborough Community College in the foundation level, learning ABCs. I moved through the levels. When I finished, my English level was high so they recommended a cooking class. I learned a lot and was very interesting. You need the DOH certification to become a chef. It was very hard - I failed twice, and I said “I am not going to give up.” I took it a third time and passed. Now I’m a chef. Education has given me new opportunities in my life.

3. What do you think would be different about NY or the world if everyone had the opportunity and support to continue their education?00:00I think that if everyone had an opportunity to continue their education the world would be a much better place. People would have the chance for a better job with higher pay and greater benefits. It would allow people to live a higher quality standard of life. Education not only affords people better job opportunities for growth and higher income. It helps people in many other ways, teaching people about other cultures, backgrounds and religion. It makes the world a better place when we learn about each others customs. It would also reduce crime and violence caused by poverty and a lack of economic opportunities. It would also help the economy because there is a lack of positions do to an uneducated public to fill these jobs.
