Tell your story

Whether it's the view from the summit or the tower or the experiences en route, fire tower fever grips you and there's no turning back. Fire towers have a special meaning to people more than just a peak or fire tower to hike to. Yes, you are guaranteed a view, but what’s more is tradition and family memories and of course, the fire towers themselves - the history, the views. Fire towers are "story" - your story. The Adirondack Mountain Club wants to hear your fire tower story. Tell us about your adventures on fire tower trails. We will share your stories online and in print to help share the importance of these uniquely historic fire towers. Do you have a fire tower story you would like to share? The Adirondack Mountain Club’s oral history project ADK Voices (adkvoices.org) is preserving stories from the past and collecting stories from the present for the future. We want to hear your fire tower hiking stories.

These stories may be edited, published and shared.

Tell your story
Tips for telling a great story
  • Tell your story as if you were talking to a friend or a relative. Make it personal.
  • Add photos! It is best if the first photo you add is a nice image of yourself so that people can see you as they listen to or read your story.
Tips for audio recording
  • You can re-record as many times as you want. Take a couple of practice runs until it feels more natural talking into your computer.
  • Try not to use a pre-written script so that your story sounds as natural as possible. It is ok if it is not perfect.
  • Try to speak as clearly as possible, and get as close to the microphone as you can.
  • Try to find a quiet place with no background noise. It is even better if the room has carpet. This will reduce the amount of echo on the recording.
